Beach Park and Porto das Dunas: Brazil’s Big Water Park and the Beach Town Around It
Read More
Picture climbing a tower the height of a 14-story building, then sliding down it at close to 100 km/h in about five seconds. That is Insano, the signature ride at Beach Park, and it sits on a beach in northeastern Brazil that most North American and European travelers have never heard of.
Beach Park is on Porto das Dunas beach in Aquiraz, Ceará. It is widely described as the largest water park in Latin America, and it is part of a larger complex with a beach, resorts and shops. Here is what to know before you go.
What “biggest” really means here
Beach Park earns a lot of superlatives, and it helps to know which ones hold up.
Largest water park in Latin America. This is the standard description, used by Beach Park itself and by many travel sites. It is a widely repeated claim rather than an independently measured ranking, so treat it as “widely considered.” The park also draws more than 1.7 million visitors a year and was ranked second-best water park in the world in 2014.
Insano: one of the tallest slides in the world. At 41 meters, Insano was once the record holder for the tallest water slide. That record later passed to Kilimanjaro at Aldeia das Águas Park Resort, another Brazilian park. So the accurate phrase is “one of the tallest in the world,” not “the biggest.”
Records in other categories. The park markets other rides as world-class in their own type. Surreal is billed as the tallest water roller coaster in the world, with a 28-meter tower and a 340-meter route. Vaikuntudo is described as the largest tornado-style slide, with a 25-meter tower. These are the park’s own claims, so attribute them to Beach Park.
First, a correction: it isn’t actually in Fortaleza
Most listings say “Beach Park, Fortaleza,” but the park is in the neighboring municipality of Aquiraz. It sits roughly 17 to 20 km from Fortaleza, which means about 30 to 40 minutes by car, and longer at rush hour. That is close enough to combine a park day with a few days in the city.
Getting there from Fortaleza airport
Fortaleza International Airport (FOR) is the nearest airport, and the drive to Beach Park takes about 30 minutes depending on traffic. Taxis wait outside the terminal, and you can also use ride apps, a shuttle or a rental car. Resort guests often use the shuttle the resorts offer. You don’t need a rental car if you stay in the complex, but you’ll want transport to explore Aquiraz or go into the city.
The rides worth knowing
The park has more than twenty attractions, spread across thrill rides, family areas and kids’ zones.
- Insano: the icon. A 41-meter climb and a drop of about five seconds. There are height and fitness requirements, so check before you queue.
- Kalafrio: a drop of nearly 90 degrees on double floats.
- Surreal: the water roller coaster, with a 340-meter route.
- Vaikuntudo: the tornado-style slide.
- Arrepius: you stand in a capsule and the floor opens under your feet.
If you’d rather float, there’s a lazy river, a wave pool and gentler slides for families. Little kids have their own areas, including Noah’s Ark and Treasure Island. A tip from the park’s own guide: start with the biggest rides early, when queues are shortest.
Hours and tickets
The Aqua Park generally runs 11 am to 5 pm, with the ticket office opening at 10:30 am. Opening days change by season. The park’s own page said that in October it opens Thursday through Tuesday, so it can be closed on some weekdays. Always check the official calendar before you plan, and buy tickets online ahead of time for peak periods. Brazilian school holidays, such as July and December to January, are the busiest.
Where to stay
You have two basic choices.
Inside the complex. Beach Park has its own resorts. Suites Beach Park Resort has 182 seaside apartments, Oceani Beach Park Resort has 131 rooms beside the beach, and the Wellness Resort has 90 rooms designed for families. Guests get free transport to the park and can enter the water park one hour before official opening, which helps with the queues. Vila Azul do Mar, a village-style area with shops and restaurants, is also part of the complex.
Elsewhere in Porto das Dunas or Fortaleza. Cheaper options exist, and staying in the city gives you nightlife and restaurants. The trade-off is the commute.
Beyond the water park
This is where Porto das Dunas gets interesting. It’s a beach with watersports competitions at certain times of year, and local restaurants serve coastal Ceará cooking: seafood, crab and tapioca. Nearby, Prainha has beach huts and a small village, and the historic center of Aquiraz is about 6 km away. Aquiraz was the first capital of Ceará, so it has more history than you might expect from a resort area.
Why people buy property here
Porto das Dunas has become an established market for holiday homes and rental investments. Beach Park draws visitors all year, the airport is close and the infrastructure is already built. Foreign buyers should speak to a local lawyer and verify the rules, taxes and rental regulations before investing. Returns vary with price, season and management.
Practical tips for first-time visitors
- Language: Portuguese is the main language. English is common in resorts but less so in local restaurants, so a translation app helps.
- Currency: the Brazilian real (BRL). Cards are widely accepted in the complex, but carry some cash for small purchases.
- Sun: the equatorial sun is strong. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a hat and a rash guard.
- Timing: the drier months, roughly July to January, are the most reliable for beach weather. Confirm for your own dates.
- Pace: the park’s hours are six hours long, and visitors report being exhausted by closing. Plan a lighter day afterward.
